..but it’s getting harder to tell (maybe we need the Decider to help out):

Teacher could face charges over book

Sheriff’s department to turn case over to DA

A probe into allegations that a Jim Ned teacher/coach placed an inappropriate book in the hands of a ninth-grader could result in misdemeanor charges being filed against the 24-year-old educator.

The decision on whether to pursue charges against Kaleb Tierce will be left up to the Taylor County District Attorney’s Office.

On Tuesday, a day after Jim Ned’s school board refused to reinstate the suspended Tierce, Taylor County Sheriff’s Office Detective Craig Griffis confirmed the case will be turned over and that the district attorney will decide whether to pursue the case further.

“Texas Penal Code 43.24, which prohibits selling, distributing or displaying harmful material to a minor.”

I am aghast that books can be considered harmful, unless they are razor-edged or chemically toxic. In positive book-related news this week, the kids in West Virginia are fighting efforts to ban two Pat Conroy books from their school library – the story and video demonstrate that those kids will be alright.

I do think the bottom line here is the mother’s decision to file charges against this man. The news report is still very sketchy, even here in local rags. However, what is heartwarming to see is an outpouring of support for the teacher who is, apparently, much admired by many in this tiny town.

Read the ACLU report on the censorship in Texas this past year and you will truly be chilled.

wow…..i need a copy of that book 🙂

this is why i always have parents sign a release, saying their kid can check out any book from me that they want to (and if they don’t have the release on file, they can’t take a book from my classroom library).
