Our friends at Penguin Random House (aka random penguins) launched the CERTIFIED KIND CLASSROOM CHALLENGE inspired by R. J. Palacio’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel, Wonder. Sounds likes a great way to start the school year.
Wonder has been an extraordinary publishing success since its release on Valentine’s Day in 2012, reaching readers of all ages with its inspirational story. The book’s core message to Choose Kind quickly spread in classrooms and communities across the country, with teachers joining in the Choose Kind anti-bullying initiative (choosekind.tumblr.com).The CERTIFIED KIND CLASSROOM CHALLENGE offers a new way to instill the spirit of Wonder in the classroom by promoting, recognizing, and celebrating acts of kindness among peers throughout the school year.
“Since its publication in 2012, we have seen how teachers across the country have enthusiastically and creatively embraced the message of R. J. Palacio’s Wonder with their students,” says Adrienne Waintraub, Executive Director of School & Library Marketing. “We wanted to support their efforts with a classroom program that makes it easy for them to continue to share this positive force of choosing kind.”
To become a Certified Kind classroom, Random House Children’s Books is asking teachers to label a jar with the official Certified Kind label found on choosekind.tumblr.com. Then teachers challenge students to do kind deeds in order to fill up the jar with marbles (1 kind deed = 1 marble). Teachers are encouraged to post images and anecdotes about their classroom’s progress on social media using the hashtag #choosekind.
Teachers send a photo of their full jar to firstname.lastname@example.org for their classroom to be recognized as “Certified Kind,” and they will then receive an official certificate of achievement. The class will also be listed on the Certified Classroom Registry at choosekind.tumblr.com.
The first 500 classrooms to be Certified Kind will receive an exclusive Choose Kind banner. Of those 500 classrooms, a lucky five will be randomly selected to receive a personalized video message from Wonder author R. J. Palacio and will be treated with a pizza party to celebrate their achievement.
